These children live in exile in
Nakivale Refugee Camp in the
ground where the 'unregistered'
are sent.
The Rwandan Genocide did not end in 1994. Here in Southern Uganda they are safe but unsupported. Their families work for the 'registered' refugees to survive.
Women walk upto 20 kms carrying wood on their heads to exchange for some maize flour to feed their families. Men attempt to break the ground to grow some cassava or other crop.
Our visits give them hope, because they know they are not forgotten.
In September 07 these children and 5000 unregistered refugees were herded on trucks and sent back to Rwanda.
According to an article in the New Vision Newspaper, Kampala, in October, fear of capture, torture and possible execution in their homeland, has caused these unwanted refugees to make the long trek back to Uganda again.
Another HOPE partner, Mwamba Nguli reports that Hutu's have formed a base in the bush near Goma, DR Congo which has led to fighting between a militia group as well as Congolese forces.
It seems the Rwandan genocide of 1994 still has simmering repercussions?
